Modesty Empowers During NYFW

Indonesian Fashion Designer, Vivi Zubedi, brings her modest fashion collection to NYFW. This is her sophomore appearance at New York Fashion Week, first showing her wears in September 2017 with the spiritual theme of “Makkah, Madinah, Jannah”.  Zubedi has not let up, still showcasing her embellished signature abayas, and having every model grace the runway in full hijab. Zubedi displays how faith and fashion move effortlessly and in complete unison. Where other designers seem to not get it right (see GUCCI's recent collection being called out for appropriating sikh turbans, muslim hijabs and niqabs, during Milan Fashion Week) Zubedi flourishes, keeping true to her values and traditions.

This decision is an empowering one, with Zubedi supporting the women entrepreneurs in South Kalimantan who create the original fabrics featured in her collections. The difficult techniques used in the process of making these fabrics is what make the fabrics so unique. “When I saw the elderly weavers in the village in South Kalimantan, I suddenly wanted to create a collection inspired by the fashion of their time, the 40s through 60s. I want to make chic and stylish masterpieces with their handcrafted materials. I want this fabric to be the new trend in fashion.” says Zubedi.  She has introduced Kalimantan’s traditional fabric to the international fashion world. Through her presentation of these fabrics, Zubedi hopes to raise the artisan economy in Kalimantan, while also raising their quality of life.  Besides the exquisite design, the ethical goal of this entrepreneur is just another reason to support her fashion efforts!

This season's Autumn/Winter 2018 collection, hit the NYFW stage at Industria Studios, NYC.  The color palette was earthy, opening with a dress resembling terra cotta earthenware.  Olive was a go-to fave, along with classic black and white, mixed with plenty of gold embellishments, and luminous white pearls.

Lace, Velvet, Ikat prints on dresses, mixed with Victorian collars and sporty sneakers, decorated models in fancy hijabis topped with dazzling, embroidered baseball caps.  Zubedi managed to mix the traditional with the practical while paying homage.  Sporty hats, tees, and dresses donned with the line “Banua Borneo”– In reference to the "homeland of Borneo", an island in Indonesia that Vivi Zubedi chose to make the focus of her collection.

Vivi Zubedi's Autumn/Winter 2018,  "Urang Banua" collection was a hit! This says plenty since the majority of the audience was not of the modest fashion industry, or abaya-wearing crowd.  Vivi came out and quietly accepted bouquets from the audience, as well as hugs from many well-wishers and celebrities ("Orange is the New Black" and "Love and Hip Hop" actresses to name a few), singing their praises to the modest fashion maker. (of course while wearing pieces from her collection and a stylish pair of blue suede heels! *swoon*).

Vivi Zubedi Collection was sponsored by HIJUP.com who will be selling both Vivi’s runway and "Zubedi by Vivi Zubedi" collections. You can also check out Vivi Zubedi's website to shop more of her covered confections.  She is definitely a designer to support! We can not wait to she what's next for this rising designer making waves, and bringing modesty to the main stream!
